How to Get Real Smiles from Kids IN Family Photos
Family photo sessions can feel a little stressful, especially if you’re worried your kids might be shy, distracted, or simply not in the mood for pictures. The good news is that capturing genuine smiles isn’t about forcing poses or asking them to “say cheese”. It’s about creating space for children to feel relaxed, playful, and completely themselves.
Here are some of my favourite ways to help little ones settle in and show their true personalities during a shoot:
let them move
Kids are built to move, and expecting them to sit still for long rarely ends well. Encourage them to run, jump, twirl, or even have a little dance. Movement naturally brings out laughter and helps release any nervous energy. The result is images that feel alive and full of personality rather than stiff or overly posed.
Whisper a Secret
Children love being included in something special. A whispered joke, a silly question, or even a made-up secret can spark instant giggles. These quiet, playful interactions often lead to the most genuine smiles and soft, connected moments between siblings and parents too.
Give Them a Mission
Instead of asking for a smile on command, give them something fun to do. You might ask them to tell Mum their favourite animal, show off their best superhero pose, or race to give Dad a cuddle. Having a little task keeps them engaged and curious, which helps those natural expressions shine through without any pressure.
Laugh First, Pose Second
Children pick up on the energy around them, so the best place to start is always with fun. A bit of silliness, a tickle, or a shared joke helps everyone relax. Once the mood feels light and easy, any gentle posing becomes much more natural and the smiles follow on their own.
Follow Their Lead
Sometimes the best moments happen when you let children take the lead. If they want to explore, pick flowers, or show you something they’ve found, go with it. These unscripted moments often turn into the most meaningful photographs because they reflect who they really are.
The best photos happen when children feel free, comfortable, and part of the experience. Movement, play, and small prompts help create images that are joyful, expressive, and completely authentic.
Family photos should feel like a happy memory in themselves. When children are allowed to play, explore, and connect naturally, you end up with images that capture not just how everyone looked, but how it all felt in that moment.
If you’re dreaming of relaxed, joy-filled family photos that truly reflect your little ones, I’d love to help. Get in touch to book your session and let’s create something beautiful together!
