Beyond the Postcard: Surprising Shoot Ideas
Keen to do a photo shoot but stuck on the perfect location? You're not alone - sometimes the trickiest part of planning a session isn’t figuring out what to wear or who’s coming along, but where to go. Sure, Hong Kong has its iconic skyline, lush hikes, and golden-hour beaches… but what about the more surprising, delightfully random spots? The ones that turn everyday moments into pure magic?
Here are some of my favourite unexpected locations for photo shoots - places that bring out genuine smiles, little bursts of personality, and those unposed moments you’ll treasure forever.
1. The MTR Adventure
Yes, you read that right. The MTR. Between station stops and train changes, there’s a whole world of spontaneous photo opportunities: poles to spin around, seats to climb on (safely, of course!), and tiny quiet moments in the middle of the rush. Kids especially love the novelty, and it brings out their playful, curious side. Plus, the lighting is surprisingly great - and you never know what kind of expressions you’ll capture mid-commute!
2. Wet Market Wonderland
Chaotic? Yes. Colourful, characterful, and full of life? Absolutely. The wet market is one of my all-time favorite backdrops. Think vibrant veggie stalls, curious stares, cheeky grins, and a whole sensory overload of sounds, smells, and movement. It might not be the first place that springs to mind for a family shoot, but trust me, those little in-between moments? Gold. And if you're a parent, you know kids are always fascinated by fish on ice and towers of dragon fruit.
3. The Snack-tivist Strategy
Snacks are the unsung heroes of any photo session. Whether it’s a sticky bun, a strawberry, or a cheeky lollipop, snacks = smiles. Some of the best shots come when kids are mid-crunch, covered in crumbs, or sharing a sneaky treat with a sibling. It takes the pressure off “posing” and turns the whole experience into a picnic with a camera nearby. My tip? Pack something colourful and easy to hold (bonus points if it doubles as a prop).
4. Tai Kwun Magic
Right in the heart of Central, Tai Kwun is a treasure chest of textures and moods. Historic buildings? Check. Dramatic steps? Check. Hidden corners, sweeping balconies, modern art, and little spots for games of hide-and-seek? Check, check, check. It’s one of those rare places that’s both structured and free-flowing - perfect if you’re looking for something timeless but still full of movement and light.
Have a spot you think I’ve missed?
I’m always on the lookout for new ideas. Whether it’s a back alley with killer light, your favourite cha chaan teng, or your building’s rooftop garden, let me know! Let’s keep uncovering Hong Kong’s hidden gems, one shoot at a time.
